There were few surprises on Lake Mercer this morning as the three putative favorites coming into the first final appeared to stake a convincing claim to superiority in their respective events, with nary a closed water margin behind the winners for at least the final third of each race. Perfect conditions making for exceedingly fair and happenstance-free racing only reinforced the fact that these three boats are going to be hard to beat tomorrow.
In the best-of-three format, advancement to tomorrow's final goes only to the top three crews in each of the three events (men's single, light men's double, light women's double).
In the men's single, Ken Jurkowski pulled away from the field fairly early on, leaving everyone else to duke it out for the sole second spot in Final 2 tomorrow. The next three scullers finished within a couple seconds of each other, with James Dietz in second and Patrick O'Hea in third advancing to Final 2; Peter Graves placed fourth and does not advance.
Next up was the light women's double, and Renee Hykel and Jen Goldsack barreled out to a big lead on the field and never gave anything back, despite not really having to wind it up coming into the finish line. They produced the biggest margin of the morning in the offing, winning by over eight seconds, an all but insurmountable margin for the second and third place crews of Julia Nichols and Libby Peters, and Carey Brezler and Wendy Tripician.
The light men's double was the most closely contested event of the morning, with only four seconds of water behind the winners, but that doesn't mean that Aller and Frase didn't outrow the field to some extent; it's more a reflection that the boats are considerably faster than the other two events. The USRowing Training Center/Bachelor's crew of Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg and Cody Lowry, and the Malta BC/Penn AC A double of Bjorn Larsen and Rich Montgomery placed second and third respectively, and will take another shot at the leaders tomorrow morning.
Racing resumes with Final Two at 8am as today's winners try to keep the trials as short as possible and send everyone home, while everyone else throws everything they have at making us all come back for more on Saturday morning. Tremendous luck to all the crews.
